Mercury 150 Black Max Maintenance

I just bought a Grady White with 2 Mercury 150 Black Max motors. The boat hasn't run in a few years, the motor compression has been checked and have good compression and spark in all cyl., but motors were not turned over. I need someone to give me a list/protocol for getting these motors up and running. I plan on pumping the old gas from the tanks and refilling with new fuel. Obviously, I want to do the minimum to get the motors running so I see what I am working with before I do all the other required maintenence.

Also, can anyone tell me if these are reliable motors?

Thank you,
Steve

Thanks for the great link, it's very helpful!

Are these generally reliable motors ?

Re: Mercury 150 Black Max Maintenance

You guys are making me feel a little better, I just want to get these motors up an running to make sure they are good before I pile money into them to get all maintenance and neglect issues taken care. Do these motors have a timing belt? What's time frame on replacing them? These are my first outboards and I know nothing about them, so bear with me.

Thanks,
Steve

These motors are bullet proof in part because they are 2 cycle engines, and have half or less the parts of an average automotive engine.

That said, a couple of seconds without oil, or maybe a few more without water and they'll lose their goodie or worse. The oil is mixed with the fuel, either by an oiler on the engine, or if that oiler (VRO) is removed, by premixing oil with the fuel.

You've been pointed to a thread about wakening sleeping motors. If you take a chance and run one, especially not knowing just how they are supposed to sound, and one carb (out of 6) is slightly plugged, you could blow a piston fairly quickly.

If you have a chance to buy them real reasonable, do a compression test. If that's good, almost everything else is fixable fairly reasonable.

Best you bone up on em, or find someone to help you out.

Thanks John, the motors were tested by a mechanic that the seller hired, these are the #'s. Motors were not started, although the mechanic said the would turn over.

showing 108,110,110,115, on starboard motor and 104,105,104,110 on port. Please note - ?fogging oil? being sprayed into cylinders prior to turning over the motors.
Spark was present at both motors

Any thoughts?

Also, Why type and brand of oil would you suggest ?

Are these motors V-6's?

You posted compression #'s for 4 cyl's. I hope that was just a simple error of omission.

I would verify compression and spark test, you don't need a lot of tools, plug wrench, compression tester, spark tester set to 7/16 inch, and a remote starter button.

You are right, I did not write down the other cyl's, but they were also right in line with the others!
