Got an old mercury.... Vin is 4733535 which corresponds to a 77 1500 inline 6.... It's not an inline 6 it's a V6... The starter is stamped 9/16/84.... How the heck do I know the year to start rebuilding?

The starter has been replaced, you have a 1st generation 1978 V-6. Be careful as the gaskets are different on heads and divider plate. Make sure you mike bore as these oldies are usually worn past limit.

There is a build date stamped on it. Small 1/8" numbers at tha base of number two cylinder, block half where tha two halves meet. Not on tha flange but on tha base of cylinder. Its kinda right behind tha advance timin' are where it bends......
