i have an early 90's mercury 150 2.5 liter motor that won't crank. It turns over but won't crank up. After I try to crank it and then let it sit I hear beeping noises from under the console. I've been told this beeping means oil pump trouble. Am I on the right track?
Thanks

Beep Beep Beep Oil, Beeeeeeeeep Heat. Best not to run the motor until you find the cause of the beeping. Hope you didn't run it with the horn beeping that could be big trouble. Check your plugs and see if they have any aluminum particals on them, if you do you could have scored the cylinder walls. I think its best to do away with the oil system and pre-mix, some like the system but I like to know I'm getting the right amount of oil in my cylinders. Just my two cents. Good luck and let us know.
CU

-------------------
RUNNING THE MOTOR WHILE LISTENING TO THE HORN WILL MAKE YOU MORN!!

Thanks for the reply. Never got it started so hope I didn't do damage. What is the easiest way to do away with oil system and start premixing? Do I have to pull the pump? Or can I just pull the lines and start premixing?

There are two oil alarms. If it's the oil pump the alarm will cease once you stop cranking the motor. If it continues after you stop cranking it's the reserve oil tank sensor which mean your oil tanks is low on oil.

Thanks for the info. The beeping continues after I stop cranking. My main oil tank is visable and is more than 3/4 full. Could it just be a faulty sensor? Where would my reserve tank be? If it is not within the motor somewhere I must not have one.

"Main tank" is where? There are two tanks in these oiling systems. Under the motor cover or in the boat? The small oil tank under the motor cover should be full and the cap tight. For more details in troubleshooting, refer to an OEM shop manual. The intermittant beep is oil (flow rate, tank level).

The main tank is under the back sundeck above the motor. I think it holds about a gallon. It is semi clear plastic with 2 srew on caps and some tubes coming out of the caps to the motor.

IF you go to pre-mix you must remove the pump and the shaft below the pump and replace it with a plastic part that fits in the hole where you pulled the metal shaft out of.(holds the internal gear or bushing in place) You should be able to buy this part where you buy marine parts. Also you need to disconnect the line comming from the main oil tank to the motor. Disconnect at motor, and plug. Also disconnect the oil line comming from the oil pump going into the fuel lines. Take oil pump, shaft, main oil tank, remote oil tank and all lines and throw them as far as possible! It made me feel gooooood! Good luck and let us know. Re: mercury 150 problem "beeping"

The problem was the kill switch. It wasn't making contact so the engine wouldn't crank. The beeping simply meant something was wrong with the system ie the bad kill switch. That is what they tell me.
The motor ran fine all weekend. No more beeping so I guess they were right. Thanks for your replies. I'll keep an eye on the oil.

I would pull the oil pump shaft out of the hole and check for any black plastic wrapped around it. If you do go to pre mix, your gear is stripping out. I have never heard of the kill switch being related to the oil alarm system. I could be wrong but I would double check, theres no going back if your wrong. Just my two cents. Good luck.
CU

---------------------
RUNNING THE MOTOR WHILE LISTENING TO THE HORN WILL MAKE YOU MORN!!
