mercury 160 HP reverse problems

Hello everyone...This is my first post on Iboats...Great site and there is a ton of info on this site. I have a problem with shifting into reverse with my boat. Foward goes in great but when i go into reverse it grinds and if it give it throttle when in reverse there isnt any. If it goes it its one speed. Another funny thing is somtime its goes right it...especially it seems when its warms up but that could be me thinking that. Any idea on how to adjust the reverse cables. It take about 3 times to get it into reverse...Grinding on the first 2 times...Please help any ideas...Spring is hear on the great Lakes and looking to get out ASAP. Thanks in advance.... Also its a 1974 SportCraft C-Eagle 24' if that helps...

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,... Odds are the Fix,.. Is Replacing the lower Shift Cable....

Up at the top of this forum is the Adults Only section,...
In there is a Gold Mine of information,... Including the Factory Merc manuals....

Agree - most likely culprit is the lower shift cable.
