Hi Guys,

I started an account on here as I did not see any existing thread as it relates to my problem.

Recently I got what I believe to be a 1965 merc 60 6hp (based off serial number it is this, or a 1966 Merc 110 9.8 but it has the gold mercury letters on the case so I think its a 65 6?)

I am trying to get it running. It was sitting around for the last couple of years but everything seems to be in good order for the age. I think it just needs some seaform run thru it to clean everything out. On to my issue. The engine turns over but I can't get it to start unless I spray seaform directly into the carb. It will run for a few seconds and smoke a lot (the seafoam appears to be working) but will then shut off. I have given it a few goes and it seems like it runs slightly longer each time.

I am thinking it just needs the gunk cleared out, however I am no mechanic and do not want to attempt to remove the dissemble the thing myself. Do you think I will be able to clean it out but just repeating this process every 15 min or so or is it worth taking it to have someone service it? If so what will that run me? Could it possibly be something to do with the fuel line otherwise?

Also to note, the spark plug in there now is not the best but its not completely bad either. I am going to change it once I get the gunk cleaned out.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thought I would give an update on this in case anyone else encounters a similar problem.

I kept at the routine of seafoam spray in the carb (and mixed into the gas as well) and just kept flushing every 15min. It slowly was able to run more and more.

Finally I got it to run with the choke on more and more up to full throttle but when I switch it to run it would slowly pudder out. I did some more research and ended up flushing the carb jet with seafoam and let it sit for half hour. I flushed it again then changed the spark plug. It now appears to be running pretty well. Once I warmed it up I got it up to full throttle no issues with the choke off.

I will test everything out tomorrow just to double check and continue to run some seafoam in the tank when I take it for a spin this weekend. I have to admit, I am pretty impressed at how well this old thing runs and sounds. And all it took was some carb cleaner!

You must install a new impeller or risk a --" dynamic halt " on this motor.

what effect would the water pump have? When I got it running it was spitting out water like a champ thru the exhaust yesterday. Going to go back at it today with clearing out using seafoam again.
