We recently purchased a motor.. Heard it run, checked compression.. It was all great with 150 on each cylinder.. Changed the impellor, timing belt.. Now my problems..

1. Runs great with muffs and water.. Won't in the lake..

2. Pouring gas from the carbs.. These have been throughly cleaned..

3. When taken to the lake will not run or move faster than 3-7 miles a hour..

It was going as fast as 7, so not sure what is going on.. We purchased the SelocOnline book but it doesn't help alot.. The flywheel and timing pulley are different than what it says in the book.. Timing light shows it in time.. We haven't even got to run it since purchase..

Can anyone please tell me what is going on? We can't understand why it runs so great at home but when taken to the lake it won't work...

Anything else we could check for the problem? Not sure why the carbs are pouring gas.. When it is tilted also leaking gas from the carbs..

Any Help?
Thanks Kelbone

If gas is coming from the carbs it means they need to be taken apart and rebuilt. A sticking float will alow the gas to pour from the carb. A quick test is to pump up the primmer ball with the engine off. If you see gas leaking REBUILD the carbs.Take your time and be sure to clean all of the inside ports etc and blow them out with compressed air then install the carb parts.

Thanks for the replies Guys. Now we have a new problem.. Tried the boat out on water after getting it timed and synced.. Ran great here at home in a test tank.. Put housing back and went to the lake.. Would not start with the housing.. Took that off and fired right up.. Would not go any faster than 4-5 mph.. Any help on this? I am about to put a match to it.. Thanks for all the help... kelbone

Sounds like you need new plug wires. When the insulation gets old, the extra humidity from the lake permeates the wires and shorts them out.
