I own a Mercury Optimax 90HP and have been using Mercury Premium Plus oil (Synthetic Blend) since the break in period and I wonder if I could change to the Mercury Premium oil TC-W3 also recommended by the manufacturer under the warranty period.

Is it possible to mix both oils in the reservoir or do I have to drain the system first.

The Optimax requires the use of a DFI rated oil.

Merc recommends using Merc DFI oil or Premium Plus as an alternative. Merc Premium is not DFI rated and should not be used in an Optimax

You don't have to drain the reservoir. But as was said, DFI oil is what is intended for your motor. Don't run non-DFI oil. Mercury does not manufacture oils; oil companies do. Merc resells it under their labels. Any DFI-rated oil will be OK; Stick with a factory-approved label to maintain warranty compliance during the warranty period.

My Neighbor's son-in-law put TCW-III 2 cycle oil in his 150HP Optimax. We checked the owners manual to see if this was OK. Merc stated the TCW-III was fine for the optimax, however, since he had operating problems (actually turned out to be low octane gasoline), we sucked the TCW-III out and refilled with Merc DFI.

The moral of the story is to read the owners manual.
