mercury 200 offshore warning alarm

I just bought a boat with a 1993 Mercury 200 offshore. This is a 2 stroke carburated oil injected V-6.
I used the motor approximately 2 weeks before my engine warning alarm started beeping non-stop. I checked the oil reservoirs and they are both at least 1/2 - 2/3 full (engine and bigger tank). I flushed the motor with plenty of fresh water and even used a flushing solution with the fresh water to remove any excess salt bulid-up. After doing this the warning alarm still persists. Here's the catch. If I run the engine tilted up with fresh water only via ear muffs and hose the alarm stops. As soon as the engine is tilted down to exactly where the entire prop is submerged the alarm starts again. Remember it is still running fresh via the muffs and hose in both up and down positions. The only port that is below the waterline when the alarm starts is the propellor thru-exhaust. The rest are above water. Does anyone know where I should start?

hello
is it a rapid beep beep or a long steady beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee~~~~~~~p
sounds like you need to bleed the excess air from the engine tank. when tilted up it will cause the float in the engine tank to raise. when trimmed back down, if the level is not almost full, it will allow the alarm to sound again.
good luck and keep posting

Hi,
Thanks for responding. It is loud, high pitched steady beeps. I checked the clear oil lines coming from the engine reservoir and they appear to be full. How do I bleed the air? Is this a sign that there is a problem with the filter or anything that would cause the air to get trapped?

if its a series of tones try removing the engine oil cap while the engine is running and allow the tank to fill to the top. if its a steady tone its an overheat. do you have the owners manual?

Sorry, I'll clarify. It is a series of tones. I do have the owners manual, yes. Will the tank fill to the top simply by removing the cap? I don't think it addresses this in my manual.

Just crank up the engine, then loosen the cap a little, enough so that air can bleed out while tank fills with oil). Once full, tighten cap.

In regards to the beep. Long continuous beep=overheat, intermittent beep=oil warning. When you turn key on, you should get 3 to 5 little beeps (this is the system checking itself.

Put oil in the gas until you're positive the oil injection is working OK.
