Hello

New boat owner with a question that I have googled quite a bit without any success.

I have a Mercury 2 stroke 90 HP Elpto from 2004 that after a short while sounds with a steady beep / alarm. According to the manual this should be overheating but I have a little trouble believing it

- When I put my hand the engine block, it is not warmer than it allows me to put my hand on it and it is only lukewarm

- New Impeller for the 2017 season and

- A tell tale that you can see by 15 cm below the water surface has little experience but judges it as a strong beam.

The container for oil is just over 2/3 full.

When I slow down the boat and put it in neutral, the alarm stops after a few seconds and I can move on, after a few minutes then it can sound again, all the time with temperature on the engine that allows you to put your hand on it (on the engine block not the cover ) without feeling any discomfort.

I am happy to receive your thoughts about

- I can run with it because it does not get hotter than I feel any direct heat on the engine block

- Has someone encountered the same problem and how did you solve this

I am also wondering if I should disconnect the sensor for low oil and see if it stops sounding then (is it possibly someone who has a diagram of the electrics on a 2004) If this did not help then I am thinking of changing the thermostat and/or the heat sensor

Very grateful for your thoughts !!

I've got a 90hp 2000 model. Never seen this problem but my guess is that the oil level sensor is misbehaving. It should be very easy to trace this wire just looking at the wires that go to the oil tank. I don't know if its an open switch for normal or closed but an ohmeter /voltmeter can help you check this out. I saw this happen in a fuel injected newer version and unfortunately it required replacing of the whole tank so you want to be sure. The experts on this site will ask for your s/n so you may as well get that out if you haven't solved the problem.

I would not change the thermostat (if it doesn't feel hot) or heat sensor which could also be checked with your ohmeter.
OTOH, a motor that old like mine, it wouldn't hurt change the thermostat. Mine got stuck partly open so at low speeds it ran too cool and would stall easily at idle requiring more choking to restart and then fussy running till I got up to speed and load that forced it to warm up.

Thanks for your response! I will try the oil sensor first then, what reading of ohmeter / voltmeter do I want to see.

The S/N is OP295183.
