Go to the CDI Electronics website and read up on testing. You will need a Multimeter and a DVA (Dual Voltage Adapter) to do most of the ignition tests on your motor. Do a search here on DVA. There are plans to build one.

Re: mercury 200hp

If the engine runs, a really simple test of a voltage regulator can be done with simple 12v test light. On the red side the light should be bright on the yellows (testing output from the stator) the light will be dim and then increase in intesity as rpms increase.

If you suspect that a VR is causing engine running problems, just disconnect it. If the problem goes away then it's likely the regulator. If it persists then its probably not. It's not part of the ignition circuit and as long as your battery is in good shape the engine should run fine without it.
