Hey all, I've got a 1992 20' Challenger Bass boat with a 1992 Mercury 200 xri efi motor. I've had it since July of 2013, its always run great but i took it out today and on my way in a beeping starting coming out of the Quicksilver shifter box. It has a foot throttle so the box only does the Ignition and shifting as far as i know. The motor did die when i was coming in and got towed to the ramp. Once i got there it would start and go in gear as was ably to drive it on the trailer. The beeping will not stop, it doesn't seem to be running hot and it's full of oil. It has to be some kind of warning beep but i don't know.. Does anybody have any knowledge of this. I would really appreciate any help you guys can give. I'm new to boats but have great mechanical skills and can work on anything. Thanks

Re: Mercury 200xri shifter beeping

Hello and :welcome: to iboats.

Can we start with an engine serial number, and the characteristics of the beeping (is it a single long beep, 2 beeps a minute, short continuous beeping...?)

If you do not have the service manual for your engine, see my message to you in Notifications at the top of this page.

That may indicate a faulty oil pump. The sensor is on the shaft of the oil pump, and sometimes the drive gear for the pump fails...

That would make since. Now to find the oil pump. Someone is sending me a service manual. Thanks Chris

From the manual, Section 3E-8, para 3:

The oil injection warning sound is an intermittent
“beep”, “beep”, “beep”, etc. The overheat warning
sound is a continuous “beep” (not intermittent).

See the oil pump under Section 3E, OIL INJECTION.

Re: Mercury 200xri shifter beeping

There are a few things that will cause this beeping sound. The broken tone is oil related. Here are the possibilities. 1. oil shaft is not turning and shaft sensor realizes it and tells oil module to activate horn. 2. oil sensor in tank fails telling oil module there is no oil in tank setting off alarm. 3. Oil module failure 4. Switch box failure (supplies peak voltage to warning module) 5. Broken/shorted wiring to the oil module. 6. Shaft sensor failure.

Unhook the two sensors that go to the oil module( located on top of engine port side) Start engine in water and see if horn still goes off. If so hook up timing light to each plug wire to see if each coil is firing individually. If all cyl fire and horn still beeps then the module is likely bad. If the horn does not beep after unhooking sensors hook them up one at a time and see which is causing the problem. If it is the shaft sensor you will need to pull the oil pump and look at the shaft to inspect for plastic shavings. The gear that drives the pump is plastic and does fail occasionally.

Before you run the engine to test add a 50:1 mix to the fuel in case your oil pump has failed. A little more smoke and possible a fouled plug is better than a blown engine at this point.

The motor seems to run fine now. at the time this all happen it killed the motor, and would not even turn over.i was think it was seized up at the time. But 20 mins later it would start and run fine.

Are you saying the motor seized and is now running fine ?----------You should at least do a compression test !-----Then run with 50:1 until you confirm that oil injection is indeed working properly.

Agree with racerone. That motor should have been "scanned" as soon as it beeped. Our cost here to do that is a heck of a lot cheaper than a powerhead.

Re: Mercury 200xri shifter beeping

yes it started beeping so i was heading in to the ramp and it seemed like it seized. 15 to 20 mins later it ran and still runs. I have it hooked up to water in my back yard. I'll do a compression check on it and get back with you guys. Thanks again for all the help.

So what should i do next? Rings & bearings? I work on V8's all the time but never a boat motor.

Ouch. That engine needs a strip and rebuild!

It's likely a scored piston and cylinder liner. You strip it, have that cylinder bored and honed and slip an oversize piston in the new hole.. (yes, on outboards you can just do one cylinder).... Do you have a copy of the Merc GENUINE manual?

Re: Mercury 200xri shifter beeping

Yes , not surprising at all.---Clearances vary and one has the least clearance and is first to jam up.-------Now to find the exact cause of this so that it does not happen again.

Re: Mercury 200xri shifter beeping

Is the 113 compression average for that motor??
