I have an older model(mid 70's) Mercury 20HP tiller control motor on my boat. The past year after I start the motor and reav up the engine it slips into foward gear from time to time, but is gettng worse. I also have a little fuel that drips out of the case after the motor has been sitting idle for a while. I would not have noticed this except for the small slick on the water it creates. Any suggestions on what is causing this? Any suggestions would be apprectiated. Thanks in advance to any help.

Hi Duckinit,
If you look on the starboard side of the motor where the shift handle is, you'll see a flat, horizontal piece of metal just inside the cowling. One end is anchored by two Philips head screws, and the other has a little crimp in it that rides in some detents on the horizontal shift shaft. It has some spring tension to hold the crim in the detents. Those detents can wear down with use allowing the lower unit (spring loaded into forward) to jump into gear.
What I've done on some was to remove the horizontal flat spring and bend it a bit downwards in a vice to give it a bit more bite on the shift shaft. Then grease the detent area so that the increased tension doesn't wear the detents down further. You might also be able to clean up the detents with a Dremel tool if you're careful.
As for the fuel issue, I'd check around the plastic cover on the side of the carb. It houses the screen filter and they can loosen up sometimes... Check for drips there...
- Scott
