this is kind off a 2 part question.
First, I have 2 25hp mercs. 1 is a 1992 model with the older electronics and linkages, the 2nd is a 1999 model with the new switchbox and has electric start etc. The 99 blew the bottom cylinder (common as we all know)... 1992 motor has a broken lower unit housing and is in general rough cosmetic shape.
What i am pondering doing is a powerhead swap (putting the good '92 powerhead on the newer motors body.
My question is are the block absolutely identical as far as linkage taps and electrical component tap holes the same? I for obvious reason do not want to go down the road of drilling and taping new holes in the block to make the new stuff compatable.
The 2nd part of this question is are the older components compatable with the '99 model's body based linkages etc.
I just dont wanna get to far into this process and realize my plan is not going to work.
Thank you for any help you can provide.
