I have come into possesion of a fire damaged 250hp Mercury. I've taken the motor off of the boat and inspected it and there is some damage. The Top cowling is destroyed but inside it just doesn't look that bad. Some wiring is melted but nothing that doesn't look repairable.

I kind of don't know where to start. I don't want to just throw this motor away without doing some checks. I went to a mechanic today to talk to a little about this motor. I was hoping that it would be possible to try to wire this motor up. Repair some of the wiring and try to get it started to get an idea of what parts might be needed. Any advice hear would be appreciated. I mean if the altenator is bad try to run without it. Is this possible or does it have to have the altenator to run? I just kind of need to know whether the motor is worth repairing are not.

I didn't pay anything for it and it's worth 6 to 7 thousand in running order. I know i need a wiring harnass and a control box. Does anyone know a good place to get used parts for mercury outboards.

I'm going to try talking to another mechanic. The one i spoke to today just got me more confused than anything. What i want to do is bring the motor to a mechanic and have him tell me what parts I'm definetely going to need but I don't want to spend a fortune in the process until i know more of the extent of the damage. Some of these parts are just outrageous. And if I can get used ones, so be it.

Any advice would be appreciated. I mean the powerhead is outstanding and the lower unit is allmost brand new.
