Hey all,

Tomorrow I am going to pick up a small fishing boat with a 95' Mercury G158531 25hp motor on it. I'm going to go through it and bring maintenance items up to speed. The motor appears to be in pretty good condition except it hasn't been run in 3 years. All of that aside I would like to know how this motor stacks up as far as reliability and performance.

I understand that performance depends on what the motor is hanging off of but if anyone here has some experience with this engine I would appreciate your input. My outboard experience to this point is limited to much older OMC outboards. The one I'm running now is a 73 25hp and it is as reliable as can be. With proper maintenence can I expect the same from the Merc? Thanks for your time.

That model could be a rebadged Yam engine for Merc or even a Tohatsu which I'll doubt. Post some interior picks if possible for clarification.

Happy Boating

Sea Rider, I will post some pics this evening. Do you need pics of any particular component?

Sea Rider,

Can you tell me some things to look for to differentiate between a badged Yamaha and the Mercury version? I am still fighting with this picture thing. Thanks.

Thanks for the response flyingscott. Any inputs with reference to this engines reliability? Good, bad or indifferent will be appreciated.

I will definitely be changing the water pump because the tell tail is inconsistent. It puts out a steady stream for about 10 seconds, then slows to a drip. I am going to start working on it soon. It runs, but seems lean at idle. I'm thinking the carb is gummed up after sitting for the last 3 years. I know the previous owner and he is not all that smart on ethanol or even stabilizing the fuel. Wish me luck.

Update,

I cleaned out the carb and this motor runs like a watch now. Excited to see how it does on the water.
