Buy a service/maint manual for the specified year. Read it and become intimate with it. Even if you are not going to do maint yourself, you should be familiar with what time intervals things need to be done.
Also I would have the drive pulled and bellows inspected. Pressure check the drive.
I had one for a while and its an adequate motor for tooling around it was pretty trustworthy

Ayuh,.....

It's a nearly 50 year old Proven design.........

As long as it's Fed,+ Cared for,.... It'll last darn near ForEver........

Is that NEW boat "New to you" , or a 2008 boat.
If it's a brand new boat. READ the owners manual.
There are a ka-zillion of those engines out there and in use. Probably more than the 350 Chevy.
If you want to take care of it properly, you will need the OEM service manual for the engine and the drive.

Despite the tons of gross abuse many owners of the 3.0 throw at them, they normally outlive the hull.....

from what i've read, heard, and experienced, one of the best engines ever made. this engine runs all weekend on one tank of gas and has no problem getting anyone up on skiis or wakeboards. pushes 38 mph withh 6 people in the boat. what more can you ask for? great motor!
