Today officially kicked off the time-to-get-ready-season for me.
Last year I picked up the little skiff in my avatar under the ruse that it would be for my grandson. It has an '87 Marc 35hp on the back. When I got her, the lower mounts were shot...worst I've ever seen. I had to replace two of the top four mounts as well. The rubber under the hood was shot - fuel pump, carb, float was saturated. Well, a few hundred $ later she was ready for a full season of crabbing and gunk holeing. My grandson and I had a blast all season. The Sea Ray sat at the pier jealously an unusually significant part of the season.
Well, by the end of the season, she was only spitting minimal water out idling, sputtering and occasionally popping. She did good though and always got me home.
Well, today I stuck in a new impeller. I like to take it apart before heading to the store. Merc has like three kits with varying amounts of parts. I was figuring worst case. When I got her apart, the cup was pristine, along with the gaskets and seals. I got away with the impeller only. This rarely happens. I was glad to see it had been replaced at least once before. Of course I changed the lower unit oil while I was there too. Having changed it last year, it looked fairly good.
I had taken my camera out to document the process for posting here so newbies could be walked through both processes. Sorry, the battery was dead.
Well, that takes care of the bottom end.
Left to do is replace the carb - got one on the bench freshly rebuilt over the winter. The idle circuit on the existing one is the cause of the sputtering and popping along with some other marginal issues internal to the carb. But it ran great all season outside of idling. While crabbing, it would idle for hours on end. Once an hour or so I would crank her up a little so as to make her happy.
Also, I need to replace some (external) fuel line and replace the water separator filter. Also have to figure out why she's not charging. I hope to get to this Monday.
I'll have a fresh battery in the camera!
