Hi

I have taken the lower leg off to replace the water pump impellor. The gear lever was in neutral when I did this. When I bolt the leg back on. Will it just slip back in. I ask this question, as the last time the impellor was replaced I watched a Service man do this. I recall him moving the gear lever to another position when bolting the leg back on. But I also recall that he tested the unit in a drum with an electric drill to turn drive shaft. I assume the small shaft is the gear shift. Maybe he turned this to enagage forward while he was testing, and when reassembling adjusted the gear lever to suit.

Also, one vane was completely gone. Should I use air or water to vent the cooling system to make sure it hasnt lodged anywhere.

I now live in a town with no Outboard motor mechanic. So have to do it myself. Would hate to make a major blunder when putting back together. Hence my question.

Thank you for any replies. I know a lot about underwater gold dredging, but very little about fixing outboards.

Cheers Trev

Trev, before you attempt to do this ,please get a service manual that is applicable to your motor :) .

Trev
I agree with E. Fudge, if there is no local Mechanic buy a manual and they'll give you some idea.
As for the lower unit and selector, I've just completed mine! First attempt in neutral and it slipped into fwd gear, posted a note on here and somebody recommended that the motor be left in forward gear. Its now back together no probs, perfect.
It sounds daft, but for my sake disconnect your spark plug lead. :)

Any thing else, speak up this forum its the best for friendly, helpful advice
Mark

Sorry

Meant to say, it won't do any harm blasting through with compressed air, it might just bring out any other rubbish

Mark

Re: Mercury 4.5 Lower Leg re-assembly

Thanks fella's. Motor back together, had some trouble with getting impellor over woodruff key. In the end glued key on with a small drop of Superglue, that held it in place and inpellor slipped over it no trouble. Ok it took us three attempts to get the gears sorted, had them going in all directions but got that sorted. Found the Search Feature on this forum invaluable. Pumping well now, so back to river tomorrow.

Cheers Trev (NZ)
