I have a 1978 Mercury 4 hp Model 40. I am trying to replace a broken rope on the pullstart. I know all of the hazards of taking this apart and dealing with the recoil spring. I have taken precautions to deal with this. How does the rope attach to the pully it winds on?
There are two pins that go through both sides of the pully and are close to the hub. I thought that the pin closest to the hub should pierce the rope and that the tag end of the rope would go between the other pin and the hub. When I did this the rope did not wind on evenly with a hump in the rope occuring where it wound over the pin farthest from the hub and not allowing all of the rope to wind on. Also, the recoil won't wind the rope easily because of
