I just received a 14 foot boat... Needs a little work but nothing big... I have a 40hp mercury outboard motor. How fast would be the approximate speed i will get out of it.. I am looking to go tubing in it and wondering if it will have enough power... Please help...

Hi,

If you have an enclosed bottom tube it should be ok.
If your using a truck tube it will not be enough HP to get it up
on top pulling an adult.

Just wondering, I have a 16 foot tracker and the max size engine i can have is a 40HP. Would a 40 be safe to use on your 14 foot.

I recently found a 80 hp motor that i am looking at buying... I am just wondering since my boat only says max out at 60 hp... I was wondering why not bigger... Do i need to reinforce something... New to boating but boat doesn't have enough power to pull...

Jawzman, not a good idea to exceed your posted HP rating. Boats are designed around specific parameters for safe operation. I wouldn't want to go two fast with a 14 foot vessel. My 16ft starcraft with a full 2 piece dash empty with me in it would do 30MPH with a 40hp Merc. Tubing is not to exceed 16mph. Be carefull mate.....Don't forget that you can adjust the prop pitch for more out of the hole power.

Again, you need to try. If you have 4 people on the boat check the tach. If it won't reach operating speed a prop change might help. You will gain out of the hole but lose a little from top end. Try a prop calculator......

Re: Mercury 40hp

I have found a lot of the parts I need for my 1980 Mercury 40 at Marine Engine. Talk to Clif Casavant. 802 247-4308 or 802 247-4700.

As far as the motor, I use the one above on a 17 1/2 heavy fiberglass trihull bass boat. Put a stingray on it to get it to plane good. 28 mph w two guys and fishing gear. But the boat could use more.

Your waterpump impeller may need replacement or the thermostat could be bad I would replace the imp and check the stat.
I guess I should ask, did you check the tell tale to see if it was plugged?
Also did the engine block get hot?

Concerning your "Can I hop it up post."
Yes you can, but it is not worth it It would probably
be cheaper to buy a bigger engine.
