I have a 'newer' 4hp four stroke mercury outboard. it is water cooled.

I am aware of how to store it, and store it vertically.

the other day, after several months, i go to start it. after a few pulls, it finally almost starts, but a bunch of oil shoots out/leaks out right around the prop area...

of course this is a 4 stroke, so this is strange to me. it almost seems like engine oil, perhaps lower unit oil? i dont know which one?

i dont have the service manual yet, but from what i've learned, the exhaust comes out of the prop area. somehow either oil is getting into the exhaust or a seal is busted and some lower drive oil is getting in there?

what do you think? i can provide any more info/pics if you guys need.

thanks so much, im trying to learn as we go! I got jetskis, motorcycles, everything, and i'm learning a little bit about all different motors as I go.

talked to a mechanic, he seemed to think that maybe the motor had been positioned incrorrectly and oil drained into the cylinder, and thus it then shot out the exhaust when i tried to start it.
still worries me a bit, i'll try to check the dipstick level.
