Sorry I dont have much more info right now, but I was wondering if anyone could give me the lowdown on a motor?

My neighbor has a 5 hp Mercury that he is wanting to sell to me. He doesnt know what its worth and I'm not sure what to ask without insulting him.

It is in excellent condition, think its an early 90's model. Starts 1 - 2 pulls and sounds beautiful and smooth.

Any issues with these motors? I was thinking of offering right around $350-$400. Too high? Too low? Just right?

It is a 2 stroke, but not sure if a single cylinder or twin. What would the fuel mix be? He is going to let me slap it on my boat this weekend and try it out for the day. I have a 13' Valco Aluminum V and it should push me around just fine, yes?

Re: Mercury 5 hp info?

Ok, I got the motor. Love it. Got it for $375. Great motor, runs great. Still a couple questions. It is a 1989 or 1990 single cylinder 5 hp. What is the gas oil mix? I have been told 50:1 but wanted to make sure. I do not have an owners manual... (if someone know where I could get one that would be great).

I also wanted to change the lower gear oil in it. Will any marine gear oil work, or does it have to be a specific weight or something?

I really appreciate any responses...

The Fuel oil mix is indeed 50:1.. you can also use any lower unit gear oil that is not (NOT) a blend. any 90 weight gear oil will work , Mercury in my opinion is the best lower unit oil out there.also , with your fuel , be sure to mix your gas with the startron enzime control .. this will help your fuel last without breaking down do to the ethenol.you can get startron fuel additive at any auto store now.

Re: Mercury 5 hp info?

Thanks so much guys! I am lucky to have a non ethanol pump right near me so that shouldnt be a problem. I just changed the gear oil with the Premium Mercury 90 wt gear oil. Nice thick stuff. Dont think its been changed in a while, the old stuff was super thin and a little milky but not much. Not very much came out, but it took a lot to fill up to the oil level hole. Glad its new and fresh!

Thanks again! Its a newer motor than I thought!

I would change the water impellar, and keep an eye/check on the lowerend lube after next usage. Lube is cheap lowerends Not so much. .02
