I got a 1974 or 1975 mercury 500 50hp and I got no reverse. Tracked it down to the lower unit. I can shift the shift shaft into forward and nuetral, but when it comes time for reverse the reverse gear doesnt quite get close enough to engage the pinion gear but it is sliding. I am thinking the reverse gear is to far away from the pinion and needs to be closer with shims? Or is it the shift shaft doesnt have enough travel to pull the reverse gear closer? I doubt the reverse gear is grinded down because that would prolly mean the pinion is grinded down too, and forward works fine. I am gonna start takin things apart tonite or tommorow nite and would like to know if anyone has any thoughts or ideas, thanks.
