I have a 1984 Mercury 50hp that I just bought and after taking it out on the lake the first time it didn’t have much power, I’m not very mechanical minded but I have done a spark test in the plugs and I do not have spark on the bottom two cylinders. I’ve been told it’s probably the stator, are ther any simple tests I can do to narrow down my problem? The bad part of it all the closest boat shop is 3 1/2 hrs away. I can do the work but I’m a little on the dumb side on how to diagnose the problem! Any ideas or help I would appreciate.

Starting from the sparkplugs, you work backwards and test components.
Sparkplug wires
Coils
switchbox
stator

A shop manual will have all the test procedures and maintenance procedures, so a good thing to purchase considering distance to nearest shop.

I believe the test procedures for your motor are outlined here:

http://www.cdielectronics.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/7th-Edition-Troubleshooting-Guide_RS.pdf

On page 101.

But you should buy a shop manual for your specific motor.
