Hello everyone!
I have a 1985 Mercury 60hp 3 Cylinder engine on a 15 ft. Boston Whaler of the same age. Both bring great joy when and if they work.
Yesterday the outboard cut out to a dead stop from almost full speed while pulling a skier. I was able to restart it, however since then, it has only run very poorly, on what appears to be the top two cylinders. I am assuming this, because when I pull the top plugwire with insulated pliers while the engine is running, nothing much changes. Compression is still good on all three cylinders.
This has happened before, but had temporarily, I wont say fixed itself, but stopped appearing for weeks, before I could put a meter to the ignition.
This time however, while I was trying to restart the outboard, a different symptom added itself to the list. The remote throttle is giving me what certainly feels like high voltage electrical shocks when the engine is running or being started. Otherwise it works though, starting the engine into its currently very uneven burble and stopping it again.
It seems to me, that I have a (major?) electrical issue. My Question is, do I have one problem or are both of these symptoms unrelated?
To provide further leads, I have measured the resistance of the ignition components according to the CDI Electronics manual. A DVA-adapter for the meter is in the mail and will be there to help soon. So far, at least the resistance readouts indicate a good stator, I will report back with DVA figures.
All help and suggestions where to measure first are greatly appreciated!
