I have had 2 mercury 60hp and have had to fit impellers to both of them when i bought them.
my current one i bought about 6 months ago it didn't pump water so i renewed the impeller as it had broken up. after several visits into the sea (water was pumping fine on each occ)the impeller broke up.I fitted a new one two months ago and again had about 8 journeys out to sea (each time pumping water occ)the impeller has broken up again.
I never use flush muffs i always flush engine in a barrell that is filled to the brim about a foot above the water pump intake.
Where we fish the water is always deep so there is no risk of the engine suking up sand/gravel. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

You're probably putting the pump together with the vanes in the wrong direction. Water will still pump if the impellor is installed with the vanes backward but at reduced performance. Sometimes they'll correct themselves but it's not good for the impellor.

thanks for reply. i also assumed that this was the case, but have been told the impeller wouldn't have held up for as long as it did if it is was installed the wrong way round. It has always pumped water like a fire engine (it doesn't trickle out it floods out)

Have you inspected the inside of the upper housing for excessiver wear ? Do you replace the wear plate below the impeller ?
