Mercury 60 ignition

Hi
Motor (Merc 650) wouldn't run at high rpm.
So I replaced a faulty stator with a new one.
In the process I removed the fly wheel - splitting it by removing the inner circle of bolts. Marked the parts thoroughly for safe reassembly.

Now the motor seems to have gotten the ignition timing all wrong.
When cranking - the motor will give a couple of misplaced shots and then nothing.
Have checked the plug no1 for spark : OK
Have checked markings on fly wheel when Cyl 1 is at TDC : "OK"
At least the timing pointer is within the timing marks on the fly wheel.

Is there an easy way (dirty trick) to check the ignition timing?
Haven't got any fancy measurement equipment.

Could it be a faulty trigger ?

Re: Mercury 60 ignition

Since you confirmed the flywheel was put back on properly then you need a Timing light.

One other thing, check your wiring.

Re: Mercury 60 ignition

New mwchanic checked the wireing and found two wrong connections.
Two of the three ignition wires from the trigger had been swapped - causing the coil timing to be all wrong.
Timing should be 1 - 2 - 3, before correction it was 2 - 1 - 3

Now the motor :
- starts ok.
- runs OK at low RPM
- seems to choke when thottle lever is over 50%
Doesn't stop but has no power. Unable to reach hi RPM (boat in water).
1. Stator is brand new.
2. Mounted new(ish) switch bok (from a very similar 50hp Merc)
Test: no change
3. Mounted new(ish) trigger (from the same 50hp)
Test: no change

WHAT can cause such behavior?
Chokes when throttle lever is pushed beyond 50%
Could it be a fuel line problem?
Fuel pump perhaps?
Could it be some other faulty electronics?
What-what-what?

Anyone??? Please help.
