Mercury 60hp Bigfoot Benefits?

I am looking at buying a Mercury 60hp Bigfoot for a 19 foot Seaway skiff. The engine is in excellent condition and has up to date service records. Off hand I believe it is a 1995. What exactly does the "Bigfoot" designation mean? Does it have a larger lower unit? Does it have a larger prop? What are the benefits/downsides of the Bigfoot? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

the big foot designation is applied to Mercury motors intended for pontoon and work boat service. They have a heavy duty gearcase that has 2.33:1 gearset instead fo the standard 1.83:1 gears. You will not be happy with that motor on a regular boat. The big foot motor uses a larger diameter prop because of the heavier loads the engine is expected to push. Although you can prop that motor to perform nearly as good as the standard motor, the larger gearcase creates more drag and is heavier. I would continue to look if I were you.

I am hesitant to pass up on it since it is basically going to be free. I have the option to trade some carpentry work for the engine. What prop would you recommend? The current prop is a 13 3/4 X 15. It needs to be replaced anyway, so... The boat is light and flat at the stern so it planes easily.

The Bigfoot uses a special soft rubber hub propeller designed to reduce clutch rattle. You may not like a non Bigfoot prop. As mentioned before the Bigfoot combo is designed for pontoons and displacement hulls.

If I were to order a prop from Iboats do I also need to get the special hub?

Forget the hub statement as that is a very common rubber hubbed prop vs the more current XHS (exchangeable hub style). The lower unit on that motor is the same as the one used on 75-90 HP motors. I happen to have a 75 HP with the standard rubber hub and there is no clutch dog rattle. You don't experience that unless you install a heavier stainless prop. You can use either. If you order an XHS style prop you need the hub to match. Order from iBoats and the hub will be listed automatically. As for performance, Johnson/Evinrude used 2:42 gearsets on their 40/50 HP motors for years and they were not specifically designed for pontoon service so your situation is merely one of propping correctly. On a very light boat, I would try a 13-1/4 x 17P. That prop should put you in the 33-35 MPH range with that engine and you should still have good hole-shot. Mount the engine so the anti-ventilation plate (the flat plate just above the prop) is at least flush with the keel to about 1-inch above it.
