what color wire would i put a kill switch on for my motor? It will not stop running... It's probably corrosion in the ignition switch. I cannot find a black/yellow wire anywhere on the motor. I'd like to get the boat out on the lake next week without having to replace and rewire the entire ignition.

thanks

Re: Mercury 650 outboard won't stop running

Okay i looked at the wiring diagram and it's the salmon wire and the ground that connect to kill the engine... problem is that the salmon wire is connected to what i think would be grounded on the engine...

If somebody could, please take a look at the 2nd picture i attached yesterday and tell me where that wire SHOULD go... it was rewired and i don't know where it orignally went...

please help and thanks,

That wire on the side of the distributor is the kill wire.
It should go to the harness. Try grounding it to stop motor.
There should also be a tilt switch wired to that terminal as well.
It looks like it goes to the orange wire and I would bet that the crimp on blue connector is corroded and you don't have continuity to the harness. You should be able to pull the plug with the engine running and ground that pin to shut down motor.
Check continuity from that pin to the magneto if motor doesn't stop.
If it does stop, then you have a problem with the other side of the plug or perhaps the switch or wiring in the controls. With the key off, there should be zero ohms between that pin (E)and ground pin (D).

the blue connector was installed 3 days ago so that wasn't the problem... when my friend rewired the old corroded wires, he accidentally hooked that up to the wrong screw on the distributor... so my problem is solved... thank you guys very much...
