I have an 89 king fisher fiberglass, very shallow bassboat. 16 ft. Rated only for 4 passenger, 200 lb, 115 HP... that has no motor.
I recently picked up a 1979 merc 70 3 cyl. The motor did not bolt up, the hull is too thick in back. I can modify boat no problem, but I wanted to know before I did so if this motor would push this boat ok, or if I need to trade up for more HP? Also, how far below the bottom of the boat should the lower unit area hang? Boat use is for cruising and video taping. Thanks

Re: Mercury 70 shaft length for boat

Howdy, TT.

Welcome to iboats. :)

70hp is about minimum for a boat rated for 115. I am not a speed freak (on the water, that is) and I would want at least 85hp on your boat.

The anti-ventilation plate on the leg of the motor should be level with to 1.5" above the bottom of the boat.

Good luck. :)
