I think this is a 79 but not sure. It has a weird shaft that comes out of the top of the flywheel. The started has a fitting for the starter with lots of roller bearings. I don't know how it would grab the shaft on the flywheel to pull the flywheel and after I put in a new started rope sure enough it does not pull the flywheel. IT just comes out all the way and goes back in. I though I heard something come out of the assembly when I removed the starter housing, but cannot find anything.

well it is not a 79 model 86 or newer. Find the.parts breakdown as that is a weird set-up and that will help you find the piece. the recoil grabs that little rod to spin the flywheel it is used on the 6\8\9.9\15 hp motprs.

Weird is right fs...I have saw the parts breakdown and they peg is as the No.1 style, the more normal starter with typical dog ratchets is the No.2 style. But that is not helping and no only do the schematics give a poor rendition of the part it is not visible. Contacted a parts house that deals with obscure parts and they can't make heads or tails of it either. Both the person I talked to there and myself have seen and/or worked on many of the N0.2, but we have never seen a No.1 style like this one. Weird indeed! It is a 1987.

Not wierd or " new idea " at all.------It is a " special " bearing in there that grabs one way !-----Have that system on a 1938 WATERWITCH outboard motor here.-------Lots of the Mercury 6 / 8 / 9.9 models used this set-up.-----I do not believe that a " parts guy " does not know about these simple things !!-----Just ----google ----ONE WAY BEARINGS-----And learn what is out there every day.

OK R1 if not weird then how about "rare" on more modern outboards. So you must know some about these, so - why is the started not grabbing the shaft?

clean that bearing in the recoil !---Perhaps a bit of thin grease on it after you clean it.

From what I can see it is a bunch of roller bearings. I actually cleaned the grease from them with spray carb cleaner as I thought they might grab better. Grease or no grease no grab.

I don't know as I can't see them unless the starter is off? It looks like the bearing assembly is not easy to get out of the starter itself. Maybe the whole starter assembly it is a disposable component part? Anyway, none seem available anywhere.

they are called sprag clutches. in one direction, they lock up, in the other direction, they free-wheel.
