Hey guys, What is the best way to break in a newly rebuilt powerhead. This is a Mercury 1983 80hp inline. Just wanted to get some ideas before starting her up. Don't want to do any damage. Thanks in advance.....

I would do the same break in procedure for a new engine. 6 gal tank, double the amount of oil, 25/1. run engine at variable speeds and not at full throttle for any lenghth of time, till tank is empty. Than run normally. .02

There is a lot of opinions avail. One that I used was:(in order)

Use double oil for two tanks of fuel, then 50::1 is OK

let her idle for 15 min, and then put her in gear and idle around for 15 min.

Go up on plane for 30 sec and then back to idle for 5 min. Do that for 20 min.

For the next 1hr vary throttle and don't go wide open.
