Mercury 80hp lower unit hose ?

Can somebody please tell me what the hose is for on my lower unit. I have a 1983 mercury 80hp and right in front of the shift shaft there is a hose sticking up about a foot long. Is it to help vent something and where does it go when I reinstall the lower unit. Thank you in advance.......

This is for the speedomter,instead of a external speedomter setup.I just plugged it dont need it.
