I am looking to buy a battery charging kit from Mercury for my 9.8. It doesn't seem to have an alternator with it. Will this kit work? and has anyone dome this before?

Re: Mercury 9.8 battery charge kit

Yes..they have FULL electric kits for this motor. Some with starter and some jus lighting coils, some charging kits with no starter. They even have a tiny Mercury FACTORY hydraulic trim kit too!!! Need your serial number and go www.mercurymarine.com then go to Mercury Parts Express. You should be able to shop around and get at least 20% off list price they are showing. The only exception to this is if your motor is one of the very old styles.
Even though the included insructions are sufficiant, I highly recommend you buy a service manual if you do this...

I don't see a kit for my outboard,
serial # 6517178. Is there another place to get it?

Your serial number IS in there and there is an electric sytem available. If its an "85" or newer motor you need item #42282A coil kit-$64.43 and #95845A-5 regulator kit-$52.28=$116.70-$23.24 discount=$93.46+tax
Keep in mind, this is only a 5 amp charging circut. If you want more(15 amp setup) you have to buy the full electric start kit which is about $350.00 before 20% discount

Re: Mercury 9.8 battery charge kit

Thanks for your help. I found the coil kit, but did not find the regulator kit #95845A-5 on parts express. Is the 5 amp kit worth the money or should I just get the full electric start kit?

Whelp...You see the prices I put in for ya....The electric start kit requires another accessory, a key switch and kill button kit on the motor. The reason that is seperate is becuase you can use remote controls and stearing with this motor, so there is also an electricle harness for remote also. Anyway you look at it the full electric start conversion will cost over $300.00 with discounts. Personally I would jus use the 5 amp circuit. I think it actually puts out 6 amps..but that would only be at WOT. That'll run any lights you got, radio and GPS plus charge a liitle to boot. The 15 AMP setup DOSE rob a litle bit of horse power and that could be a problem if the boat is alredy loaded with "BOB" and gear and barely breaking onto a plane...
Remember..the prices I gave you should be all you pay plus or minus 4-5 bucks + tax 20% off list prices is all you should pay unless you like flushing good cash down the head..
