I have a couple of 9.8 Mercury outboards. Both are missing the ID plate with the serial number. How can I narrow down the manufacture date on these motors? I have one that I finished up the lower end and am ready to start with the electrical and carb and need to order some parts for. Is there any other manufacture numbers on these engines that I can date the engine from? These were made for several years with some differences from year to year.

Many thanks.

Added pictures of one of them I am working on. Anyone able to narrow down the model and years made? Ignition system/coils? What spark plugs go in this motor?? Thanks

Depending on the year and whether they have the original powerhead or not, you might check the powerhead, on top near where the tell tale hose is connected. Early models have the serial number stamped here. Later models sometimes have a aluminum plug about the size of quarter on the side of the powerhead. 20hp's sometimes have the serial number stamped on the port top side of the block near the front. And some later 9.8's do not have the serial number stamped anywhere on the block. If no serial number, all is not lost though, if you can determine which ignition system, which carb system and if you have the original decals, which decal pattern, you can likely get close enough to order the parts you need.

Good luck and lots of smarts at this forum to help you out.

Looks like a 1971 or 72, look on the starboard side of the powerhead there will be a pad cast in it with Lighting cast in the pad under it should be the serial number stamped in it.

Hi,

I have the same problem with my old Mercury 25XD. Where else can I find the id# (serial number) if the number plate is missing?

Thank in advance

70 and 71 had the dark green ign coils (have to look up the number) with the aluminum donut stator (big aluminum stator, maybe 8 to 10 coils, dark green wire to the coils, orange wire to kill switch)

72 to 73 had the red plastic phase maker stator with light green ign coils.

Both had points. Need to pull the flywheel with a auto steering wheel puller and see what stator you have.

Laddies is right with the serial location, I think I told you location near the pee hose was for a 20!

On the 25XD, have to go look at my 84, but I think it has the aluminum disk on the starboard side.

Great motors all! but if the aluminum donut, then the stator is expensive. Good luck!
