I was cleaning the sidebowl on one of my 9.8 Mercs and installing a new gasket kit. Couple of questions.

Looking at the parts diagram for the carb, part number 31 is a jet. When I unscrewed the nut that covers where the jet goes, there was no jet in there, at least I cannot see a screwdriver slot to unscrew one. Do some carbs not have this part?

Thanks for the advice!!!

Here is a link to the side bowl carb diagram. You can click on the pic anywhere you like and a closer view will come up.

All side bowl carbs have high speed jet, it is made of brass and some one may have turned the slot off it.

Looks like that might be the case. I can see the small opening in a brass piece and the threads in the carb, but there is no slot left for the screwdriver. How would you go about removing this piece?.....drill it out???

This is on a $50 motor that I am trying to get running. Put a new impeller in it. Got fire at the plugs.

Should I just try to crank the thing and see what happens before I try to drill this jet out and run the risk of messing up the carb.?

Blow it out and don't worry about it or if you have a letter or number drill of the right size you can rod it out with that just don't use a drill motor use your fingers.

it's been awhile since I rebuilt one but if I recall correctly you have to remove part # 29 to get to the jet.

Don't know, but it looks like you just unscrew the plug covering it and then reach in with a screwdriver and unscrew the jet. I was able to unscrew the plug, but the screwdriver slot is gone from someone trying to remove the jet.
The jet is still in there, but you can't unscrew it.

Re: Mercury 9.8 Sidebowl Carb questions.

Motor is running....sort of. Still this is great!!! I need to get the carb linkage adjusted for the Start/Shift mode. The linkage on the top of the carb that makes contact with the piece that moves when you turn the tiller handle is not adjusted correctly for the Start/Shift mode. In forward or reverse it runs great, but when you go to the shift mode to change gears or when you try to start the motor in the start mode it dies out. I did get the motor to idle for a while by turning the lock nut and adjusting the piece that points upward to move more clockwise for some more throttle in idle, but I was not able to adjust it with the tiller handle full clockwise to the shift mode where the motor will still idle.

What is the trick to adjusting the idle of the motor in the shift mode?

Thanks for all the advice. I am really tickled to get this old $50 motor running.
