Hi, I've was give a 9.8 mercury ser #6041958 , I think it's a 1982 model near as i can tell.. It sat in the bottom of a boat for a few years with a broken tiller handle ... I cleaned the carb and rebuilt the tiller handle . I also changed the impeller and put in some new plugs . The problem im having is when it cranks it won't idle down without dying. I also noted that when I tilt the motor up and lock it gas pours out the front of the carb. While idling down the plugs seem to be getting good spark . I just dont know where to go with it now ..any suggestions??? thanks

Probably back into the carb. There must be a restriction in the idle circuit which would account for the dying at idle. The float level may be set too high which would account for gas coming out when tilted, although that isn't terribly abnormal with a Merc.

Did you remove and disassemble the carb when you cleaned it? It probably needs to be rebuilt. Very common of a motor that has sat for a long time.
