Mercury 9.9 hi thrust lower unit

My buddy has a 2005 Mercury 4 stroke Pro Kicker, high thrust 20" shaft outboard he uses on his jon boat. He hit a log and busted up the gears in the lower unit. He was quoted 1200 for a new one. First question, is the motor a yamaha power head? I found the tohatsu lower units and was told they will not work. I think the high thrust was slowing his jon boat down quite a bit as well, is there a source for used non high thrust lower units to fit this engine? I dont know where to look and 1200 is out of the question, thats what he paid for the entire engine. Would there be a market just for his power head and broken lower unit that is in otherwise great shape (electric start, power trim, etc)? tia.

The 8 and 9.9 use the same lower unit and the 9.9 was available with a standard lower unit. A standard lower unit has a 2.08:1 gearset. The reason the Hi-Thrust lower unit didn't work well was probably because the engine had the equivalent of a pontoon prop. Hi-Thrust and Hi-Speed are at opposite ends of the performance spectrum. With a higher pitched prop the engine probably would have performed better. Anyway, the same places you looked for the Hi-Thrust lower unit is the same place you would look for a standard lower unit. Check Craigs List, e-bay, or Twin Cities Outboard although they deal primarily in older stuff. Google or Yahoo search for "outboard lower units" or "marine salvage". Check every Merc dealer in your area. You might get lucky and find an engine with a bad power head that they would love to get rid of.

OK hope I can get some help with this. I believe my friends outboard I described above is a Yamaha power head. I don't know if it is a 2004 or 2005 but it is a Mercury High thrust 4 stroke 9.9 with power trim and all. Does this outboard have a yamaha lower unit as well as the powerhead?? I found this for sale:

"Yamaha 9.9HP Complete Lower unit fits Model T9.9ELH2D Part # 66R-45300-12-4D"

Supposed to fit '05 Yamaha 9.9 4 strokes. Anyone have an idea how I can check if it will fit?
