I have a 2006 year model mercury 90 hp 2 stroke, it runs great once started. and starts great the rest of the day. my problem is it is very hard to start when cold. like when it hasn't been started for a week or two. the key says push to choke. but it don't help. i can't hear any noise when pushing the key. does a 06 mercury 90 hp have a choke, if so how does it work? i would like to get this cold starting problem fixed, so i wont get stranded on the water while fishing this winter. if any one has this problem with your motor. how did you fix it? please tell me. thanks

Your engine has a primer in place of a choke and if the carbs a pumped up should fire in the first couple times over. Either the primer is not working, you can remove the cowl and there is a small lever on the primer solenoid to manual operate it, to see if thats the problem or you need to have someone who is used to start inf one of that series of engine to give you a hand showing how to operate it. Don't be offended as many people have problems with them if not shown.

thanks laddies, for the reply. i had read somewhere that this motor, didn't have a choke. think i'll take it to a machanic and let him show me how it works. I had a johnson before i bought this mercury, it had a choke, when you pushed in on the key, you could hear the choke click. can't be much wrong with it, it runs to good after i get it started. I do thank you for the info. and may the good lord bless you.

Try squeezing the bulb on fuelline and pushing primer button at same time. If motor starts better it means that your primer is draining.Look for a bad hose or clamp going to it, or diaphram could have a pinhole.
