I am replacing the stator on my mercury 900 that I just bought. It's a ProCraft 1560 bass boat with a old mercury 900 90hp that's been sitting for an unknown time. Probably 5-6 years. Tilt limit switch wiring, stator, and distributor wiring are all completely corroded. Going to replace the stator. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. TDC when removing the flywheel? Cranking and testing some how before making a ton of purchases would be nice. Dont want to damage anything by putting power to it with shorts. Thanks in advance to you veterans out there. I'm learning as I'm going. Thanks again.

Welcome aboard.

Just pop off the flywheel. It's keyed so no need to worry about TDC.

What is the serial number so we can look and see if anything special needs to done?

You may replace the stator by removing the 8 bolts that circle the large nut. Set the motor to TDC to make it easier to assemble correctly. Use locktit on the bolts.

The distributor wiring is a lot more worrysome. Have you priced a new trigger for that motor? It is $200+. The rotor is non-removeable and also $200+. The wiring harness is near $100.

The stator only charges the battery. You might get the rest of the motor (if you want to) ready to run, before investing in it.
