mercury 90HP lays down intermittantly

2010 Mercury 90HP Opto max runs fine, but lays down intermitantly and I am told it is heat related and has a restriction due to sand or blockage. However, it does run fine at times so how can it be a blockage or restriction. Is this a know problem for these engines?
