I bought this 96' 50HP merc today. The guy was running his oil in the gas but handed me the brand new "autoblend" tank and pump unit. Any reason Why I should or should not hook it up? Anyone have a installation manual for the thing? there is only 3 wires, my guess is Purple to the switched 12V under the hood, Black to ground and Tan to tach. But the plumbing and stuff I have bo clue and the oil is something a guy dont want to guess on. Or should I just Mix the gas as the last owner did?

All good questions...
Id order a manual or get one locally, read it, and then tackle the install.
I think they work better with the injection system, if they work right.
But mixing gas is not hard and it never runs out of oil.

I have one of these units I just want to have a play around with. Did you ever find the wiring for it?

Do not even think about installing it unless you want to rebuild engine, Mercury quit making these and no parts are offered to repair them. I know of at least 15 engines that where blown due to these units when I worked at a dealership.

Ah you see, you underestimate my ability ;) doesn't my name give a clue lol.

2 stroke oil is coloured as we all know, the more 2 stroke vs petrol the darker the fuel. I plan to make an optical sensor that with a little bit of electronics will be able to inform me of the ratio of 2stroke to petrol. That's the theory anyway!

It would be a case of mixing say 10 blends from 1:10 to 1:100 and plotting the results and then you could quite accurately I reckon see what's going on and know well in advance if there is a problem :) If it turns out and works well then I shall add it to my V6 merc so I know what is being supplied to the fuel rail :)

I shall try with various optical sensors etc to see which works best. I would imagine that it may be necessary to calibrate to different brands of oil but that wouldn't be a problem.

Hence why I said I want to have a play with one :)

I just wanted to know what the wiring did, but it appears only to inform of a low oil situation, and nothing else.
