I changed the impeller since water wasnt coming out the telltale. Still no water after replacement. I took a garden hose and held it firmly on the end of pipe that goes up thru the housing. Still no water out the telltale but alot of water comes back down thru the housing like the pipe is split or something wrong with the seal at the top. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I'll move this to the outboard forum.

Suggest the telltale may be blocked. (tubes very very rarely split). Use a decent amount of air pressure (60psi or more) and blow it with through the telltale. You can't damage anything... Water coming back down the drive shaft housing is normal. Where do you think the water goes after it's been around the engine cooling it? Straight down the housing, to cool the exhaust gasses.

Another thing to try is while running on muffs or in an barrel, stick a length of heavy fishing line or weed whacker string up the tell-tell port as far as it will go and work it in and out. Surprising what makes a home up the tell-tell.

A lot of those Merc V6 motors will not have a telltale until the thermostats open. On a hose at idle, they may never get warm enough to have a telltale.

See if water exits the gratings above the antiventilation plate and the prop hub. If so, she is pumping water.

If you’ve water coming through the lower exits and your heads aren’t getting too hot to touch for more than a second or so...the tell tale will be blocked...especially if it’s been ran in salt water and left not flushed. Quite common. Take the pipe off and clear it.
