I have a late 70's 115 Mercury Outboard (6 cyl). The motor runs great but the boat it is on is in sad shape. So, I wanted to upgrade. I found a really nice 2000 Sea Ray 18ft without a motor that I am thinking buying and transferring the motor. But, I am not sure if the wiring plug, steering, and fuel connections will be the same? Does anyone know? If it won't directly connect, how hard would the modifications be?

Steering should be standard. We need to know what kind of engine was originally on the 2000. If it was a Merc I'd assume the fuel connection would be the same and if not that would be a super easy fix. As far as the controls though....you may have to reuse yours but hopefully someone will come along with better knowledge than me on vintage/newer merc controls.

use your the existing wireing harness, mercury changed harnesses quit a bit. the plug at the motor is the critical thing. controls are not interchangeable between brands.

Mercury Connection Compadibility

As far as I can tell from the Sea Ray website, the 2000 OB model came with mecury OB, actually the exact same size motor (115). So, the controls should be mercury, just a lot newer. It sounds like the steering & shift rods should bolt to the older motor. But, I will probably have to cut & splice the electrical connetion to my existing plug into the older motor. Do anyone know where i can download a wiring diagram for both years of the mercury motors (78 &2000)?
