I may be getting a 1971 Mercury 50hp motor. It does not have controls but does come with a wiring harness.
How do I know which controls are compatible?
Is it only 71 50 hp controls? Or do other work as well?
Thanks for your help

Re: Mercury Controls

Thanks guys that helps! So if I go to any other websites what am I looking for?
Year ranges? Pin configuration? I do know that I would need cables long enough to reach from the box to the motor. Do I have to stick with 50hp control boxes?
Thanks again for the help.

Re: Mercury Controls

The control boxes you need were for all HPs from 40-150 in that era, the engine wiring plug will show you the pin configuration for the control box. You need the Serial Nr. to find parts easily.

Re: Mercury Controls

The MerControl model was commonly used throughout the '70s and I think early '80s on many Merc in-lines. The harness is hard-wired to the control, and plugs into the motor so if the harness is included but not the controller, then someone has disassembled the control and either cut or unsoldered the wires.

The older types were all white, then black with red accents and then black with blue accents.

Re: Mercury Controls

Ok I picked up these two units. I'm not sure how hard it will be to get them up and running but figured I would give it a shot. Any suggestions?
Black and blue box
White box
Other than length how do I know which control cables I need?
Also if it's missing the key can I buy a new ignition switch with key?
