Hey guys,. I just bought a 1988 90HP Mercury to replace my tired 1973 650 65hp. My question is can I use the controls from the 65hp on the 90hp? The wiring connections are different. Can I rewire the controls with a new wire, or do I need a new set of controls?

Probably the old control is compatible, both electrically and mechanically. That is to say that the wiring on the old motor can control the newer motor. The wiring harness is likely not compatible, so you will need to adapt it..

The 90HP Merc will be an ADI ignition, versus the Battery powered ignition/distributor your old motor has. If you make a connection diagram and find a way to bypass the quick disconnect of the old motor, the newer motor should work.

I figured I would be able to rewire it. Is there an adapter around? or maybe I can just replace the cable, but I can't seem to find one for under 200
