Mercury Factory new build

Well I think I got lucky the other day. I hopped on CL and there was a listing for a factory rebuild 80 model InLine 6 150 hp block brand new and still wrapped in the plastic bag. On the top of the block I can see a stamped in date of 4-2-88 and in white paint on top I see 5-2-88. Here lies the questions. I have a 76 115 inline 6 115 hp and thought for sure all my parts would bolt right on and make for a new motor. But I can see a difference in the mounting brackets for the starter and the distributor between the two. I was told it was 80's model. The only number where the serial should be on the block is a big 1 sideways with 8031 behind it. Then next to that I can see a number B 852-7738 would or could this be the serial number? Also the very top where the top of crank pops out and the flywheel and hub for distributor goes seems to be different. I was told it was for the owner of a marine store. but he died before it got put to use and the store was closed. So this block has been sitting since 1988 unused and still covered in factory sealed plastic bag. How can i find out if my stuff can be used on this block or not. Any help would be appreciated. The last pic is to compare the differences in this new block on top and the older 76 model I have. You have to click the last link to see pic too many in one post.

Well those in the parts listing are not inline 6 they are v6 and very different than the block in my pics I am so confused WTH is Mercury so vague in their serial numbers.
I still don't have a clue what I have.

Jim;

Are you sure that is a 150 inline 6 and not a 115?

Jim;

After sending you the previous information something wasn't adding up and after reading your first post again, I checked my good old book of handwritten notes and they match with the information at this link which shows the last inline 150 built in 1979:

http://www.powerhousemarineinc.com/products

Sorry for any confusion I have caused you.

Here it is as a 115:

115 115 6-cyl 0B239242 0C099999 1988 USA

ROFLMAO I am still confused.... did you click the last link under the pics in my first post and see the difference I am talking about. so why is there a difference in the top of the motor
for mounting the distributor and flywheel.

From what I see from the photos, it appears that you have two completely different motors. Only thing in common is that they are in-line 6 blocks.

IF (yet to be determined) the new block is an 80's vintage, it would not use a distributor type ignition system as in your 76 model year.

Have you compared the mounting stud pattern between the two powerheads? Any other distinguishing numbers or characteristics?

Yea The only thing that is different in the two blocks is the top where the flywheel mounts, the distributor mount for sure. Starter bracket is a bit different although it looks like mine will still mount fine. see the difference below. Notice the starter mount comes apart from the side and on the older it comes off from the front. the rest is hard to explain just look at pics. If you guys need better pics let me know I can take more.

Re: Mercury Factory new build

Well there is quite a difference in the parts numbers for the 76 vs 88 blocks and when I looked at the 1988, 115 blocks, guess what the p/n is?

It is 852-8311A4 and Jim lists the s/n as B852-7738. If the number Jim gave us for the serial number has a - in it the 852 should be a giveaway that this is not a s/n but a casting number.

At Mercury Parts Express, when typing B8527738 into their seach engine, you have to add a 0 in front of the serial number for 7 digit older numbers

Quote:
If you have a serial number (older models) with only seven digits, please use a zero in front of the serial number to find your engine. Typically the serial number will be a number (1 or 0), followed by a letter, then six numbers. Example - 1B123456
End Quote

When entering Jim's number per the above quote we get 0B8527738 and that is not a Merc s/n

I think we have been duped by a - number and one extra number in Jim's s/n.

The stamped date of 4-2-88 makes it a 1998 block but I think it is 115

Thats a 1980-1988 model ADI ignition powerhead and nothing off your 1976 model will interchange. It will be either a 90 or 115 hp as the blocks had same casting number(852-7738) but different porting and pistons.

Re: Mercury Factory new build

OK you say nothing from my motor will work. Well I know my carburetors will. Now I know that the distributor wont and probably not the flywheel. Is there a link somewhere showing the parts I need to make this block complete so I can use it. When I try looking up those years for a 90/115 hp all I find are v6 stuff. This is a inline 6 same as my 76 only with the difference in where the flywheel and distributor mounts. If I can possibly find what I need and not too much $ then I could have a new motor. If not then off to Ebay it will go. Of course I could just take my intake cover and use it on this motor.:eek:

Wont work as block and front half will need to be machined and reshimmed to make it work. Also block is not drilled for old stlye fuel pumps as newer model is on front of intake. Your carbs will work if the upper one has the top arm changed.You will need a ADI flywheel,stator,trigger,ADI mounting plate,rectifier,6 coils & brackets,2 switchboxes,wiring harness,enrichner valve,new style spark arm,throttle cam assy to work carbs and various nuts/bolts/washers. To use this powerhead it will be better to find a late model engine blown and swap over the parts as if you buy each piece new from Merc you will have about $2000 in it!!!
Flywheel..........$500
stator...............$200
packs...............$400
coils.................$240

That is because inline 6's and v6's use the same ignition components, all the way to 2001? somewhere around there anyway.
