Hi guys,

I have a 2001 Mercury four stroke, carbed outboard that is causing me some problems.
As the title says, the motor is running just fine at full throttle but at the lower end of the throttle, it is running really rough.
The motor feels as if it's missing until I get past 3/4 throttle and then it smooths right out. This condition is worse when it's cold but it's still noticeable even after running for 40 minutes or so.
The motor is also blowing some blue smoke on startup, especially if the motor sits for a week or two between startups. I'm thinking that oil is leaking into the cylinders and fouling the plugs but shouldn't that clear up after running the motor and burning off the excess oil?

This morning we started the motor and it was running extremely rough and smoking a little. I took the boat out and ran it around the lake for about one hour. During that time I ran it full throttle, at idle and everything in between. By the time we came into the slip it was running pretty good with very little hesitation or missing.

About an hour ago we went back to the boat to disconnect the battery charger and I decided to fire it up to see how it's running. Upon startup the motor was blowing blue smoke and running really rough, again. I don't know what's going on.

If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate hearing them. If it makes any difference this problem seems to be at it worst when the air temperature is really high and right now we are in the middle of a major heat wave.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Have you tried adjusting the idle needle on the carb? A couple recent issues on here ended up being solved by adjusting the idle needle. Start with that. It will save you a lot of time and money. Although, those motors were 2-stroke and just shy of 30yrs older than yours... still worth a shot though. Turning a screwdriver is free.
