Hi -
I'm looking for some input on what sort of performance I should expect from a 2006 50 horse 4-stroke Merc that I have just bought. I have never run a larger 4-stroke motor, and I am seeking any input on how it may compare to the 2-strokes that I have had in the past. I ran it this weekend, and despite the efficiency and quietness, it is not performing as I would have expected.
I have two motors that I plan to run on the same hull, depending on application. For use in rivers, I run a 1998 2-stroke Mercury Jet 45 (60HP powerhead, rated 40-45HP @ jet). This motor pushes my aluminum 14.5' hull out of the water in about 7 seconds, and tops out around 42km/h on GPS.
I recently bought the 4-stroke for use in lakes. After testing it this weekend, Iit takes around 10 or more seconds to push the same hull up onto plane, and gets a top speed of only about 36km/h.
I am asking myself if this is an issue solely related to props (presently 12"x11C composite), or should I expect more performance out of this motor? I was hoping for something closer to 50km/hr, considering approximately 10 more horsepower. I have posted as well in 'props' forum, to seek any input there.
thanks in advance for your help!
