Mercury 'Gnat' 4HP (1980-81 ish)

I came across one of these engines on CL and noticed that it was only in production for a few years. Also, I have yet to see a positive comment about this model. What's the story on this engine?


Should I not bother and keep looking ??? (this would be a kicker motor for my newly acquired 19 ft sailboat)

I do like the small outboards with the internal fuel tanks . . . would a Johnson or Evinrude of similar style be better than this model Merc?

could have been in production by Yamaha until the JV with Tohatsu. dont know for sure. I think everything under the 6hp was purchased by mercury starting back in the early 80's
